TO: Computing Research Community FROM: Fred Weingarten, CRA Executive Director RE: CRA Board Member Nominations The Computing Research Association is asking for your help in suggesting nominees for the CRA Board of Directors. Each spring CRA's member organizations elect about a third of our board members. Candidates are not required to be CRA members. Our nominating committee, chaired by Rick Adrion of the University Massachusetts at Amherst, is seeking nominations. It is important that the CRA board represents the interests of the entire computing research community, and it is our policy to solicit a broad range of candidates. Please contact the person you are nominating before submitting his or her name to ensure that he or she is willing to stand for election to the board. Nominees will receive information on CRA and its activities. Our board is a working board. Although we have a small professional staff at our headquarters, board members are expected to actively participate in the association. CRA activities include: * Planning CRA conferences and workshops. * Conducting the annual CRA Taulbee Survey on the Production and Employment of Ph.D.s and Faculty in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. * Developing projects to improve public and political understanding of the role of computing research in the national technology agenda. * Increasing the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in computing research by cosponsoring meetings such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference, running workshops on academic careers and compiling a database of individuals in computing research. * Soliciting articles and advertisements for Computing Research News and offering input on CRA's growing electronic information services on the World Wide Web. Board members are asked to attend at least two board meetings per year. Members pay their travel costs to the meetings. We understand that these time demands can be daunting to overburdened researchers. But research in computer science and computer engineering is facing major challenges as the political environment for government support changes. In the United States, Canada and many other countries, computing has been identified as a technology of critical social importance. This increased political attention places new demands on our field and offers new opportunities. The Computing Research Association is in a key position to help the community deal with these new forces. CRA always has been able to attract excellent candidates because we offer board members a significant opportunity to serve the computer science and computer engineering fields. With your help, we will continue this tradition. ************************************************************************ CRA Board of Directors Nomination Form Information on Nominator (please type or print): Name Position Organization Department Address City State ZIP code Telephone E-mail Please send this form and a biography or curriculum vitae of the nominee to: Computing Research Association 1875 Connecticut Ave. NW, Suite 718 Washington, DC 20009 Fax:202-667-1066 E-mail: jbass@cra.org We must receive this form and the biographical information on or before March 3.
