Dear Colleague: Nomination deadlines are approaching for many of the awards given by the IEEE Computer Society. Attached for your convenience is a list and brief description of the possible awards. Please consider nominating an associate for one of these awards. As professionals, we need to encourage excellence by recognizing those individuals who demonstrate outstanding skills and accomplishments within the computer science and engineering fields. Help us identify these hard-working individuals by submitting a suitable nomination by the noted deadline of October 15, 1994. (NOTE: The Deadline for the Richard E. Merwin Award and the Technical Achievement Award is October 7, 1994; and the Eckert-Mauchly Award deadline is October 3, 1994.) The nomination of a candidate for one of these major awards requires some care and attention. In addition to providing the information requested in the form, the nominator is generally asked to request letters of support that document and present evidence of the qualifications of the nominee for the award. The information provided should be as specific as possible; generalities and unsubstantiated claims do not help the Awards committee in its deliberations. Plus, there is a deadline for each award, as indicated in the descriptions, for receipt of all materials related to that award. Please contact either the chair of each award subcommittee as listed below, myself at gmpollo@cs.sandia.gov, or Pat St. Jean in the Washington office at pstjean@computer.org to obtain a copy of the required nomination form for any of the listed awards. Also, please contact us if you would like to obtain further information about the Computer Society's volunteer service awards. We hope you may know someone who should be honored by one of these awards and that you will nominate that person. We owe it to each other to publicly recognize accomplishments and scholarship of the highest caliber. The Awards Committee will consider without prejudice all complete nominations received before the stated deadlines. It is essential to honor worthy individuals who have made contributions to the profession significantly above the norm; therefore, I hope that you know someone who should be honored by an award and that you will nominate that person. Thank you for your assistance in maintaining a strong awards program. Sincerely, Guylaine M.
