Title: "Physiology and Technology of Blood Oxygenation"

Speaker: Arthur H. Combs, MD, FCCP, FCCM Vice President, Research and Development, Everest Biomedical Instruments Company, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine Washington University School of Medicine

When/where: Thursday, October 16th, 4:15-6:00PM, 200 AKW

Abstract: Oxygen is essential for life. All of the circulatory system including hemodynamic and cardiodynamic physiology is designed to guarantee the delivery of oxygenated blood to the metabolizing tissues. All of pulmonary function at the macro organ level and at the micro alevolar level is designed to continuously add oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide. The chemistry of the hemoglobin molecule is designed to serve the circulatory and pulmonary systems and cellular respiration. We will explore basic physiology of the three systems, their interaction, and common ways to assess their function and their efficacy. We will look at one engineering solution and technology designed to asses the essential value of hemoglobin oxygen saturation.
