SPECIAL SEMINAR

Title: Perceptual Grouping of Metastable Objects

Speaker: Allan Dobbins,

When/where: Thursday, March 4th, 12:30-1:45PM, Room 500 AKW

Abstract:

Arrays of ambiguous objects often appear to group into a single
interpretation. Examples include Attneave's triangles and the dynamic
quartet arrays of Ramachandran and Anstis. However there are other
displays in which grouping fails. A theory of perceptual grouping
should explain when grouping occurs and when it does not. In a variety
of displays we find that which interpretations are seen, or whether
grouping occurs at all, depends on whether the objects can be assigned
values consistent with a single viewer position or
motion. In this talk I will describe experiments bearing on the
hypothesis that perceptual grouping depends on the generation of a scene
model. I will also describe high level aftereffects that hold some
promise of shedding light on the architecture of scene understanding. t
