Abstract: Mass Spectrometry (MS) is a biotechnology that holds great promise
for biomarker identification and genome-wide protein profiling. It has been
demonstrated in the literature that biomarkers can be identified to distinguish
normal individuals from cancer patients using MS data acquired on serum. Such
progress is especially exciting for the detection of various human diseases.
Although many statistical methods have been utilized to identify biomarkers
from JS data, many issues remain in the analysis of MS data. In this talk, we
will discuss statistical issues, both data pre-processing and classification,
involved in the use of MS data to identify disease biomarkers and illustrate
these issues through a data set consisting of ovarian cancer Detection Program
clinic at Northwestern University Hospital. This is joing work with Baolin Wu,
Tom Abbott, Walter McMurray, Gil Mor, Kathryn Stone, David Ward, and Kenneth
Williams at Yale and David Fishman at Northwestern University.
