While most of TAP is geared toward issues of women in computing at the undergraduate level and above, this page is designed to include information and issues relating to K-12 girls and computing. If you know of any resources designed for young girls, parents or teachers to encourage young girls to get interested in science/math/technology and to consider related careers, please let us know. Programs & Organizations

• Camp T-Equity: Opening Doors of Opportunity through Science, Mathematics, and Technology Literacy

  Camp T-equity '95 was a 4-week, 3-hour-per-day technology immersion day camp for girls, with the goal of increasing girls' part in science and math through technology immersion in the earth and environmental sciences.

• The Computer Camp at the Computer Museum

• Digital Women

  Digital Women is a new (established 1995) nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing technology training and equipment to women and girls. They are looking for used computer equipment, donations, and volunteers to go to women's organizations and girls' groups.

• Expect the Best from a Girl

  This Web site is an excellent resource for parents and teachers helping young girls get interested in science.

• The Family Math Home Page

  Family Math is a program developed EQUALS, at the University of California at Berkeley, to encourage underrepresented groups (especially girls and minorities) to pursue math-related careers.

• Futurekids

  A franchise organization specializing in computer education, with more than 1500 locations around the world. Their goal is to help children assume the power of technology.

• Intel's ``The Journey Inside'' Technology Education Program

  Intel's ``The Journey Inside" is a national education program designed to increase technological literacy among students (especially in grades 5-9) and to encourage them to learn more about the science of computing. As part of the program, a free ``computer technology education kit" is available for use in classrooms.

• Science by Mail

  The Science Museum in Boston is looking for Pen Pals for their Science by Mail program. Program participants correspond with between one and five individuals or groups of students between grades 4-6 or 7-9. The groups conduct science experiments and send results and questions to the leaders. The museum supplies all the materials necessary to conduct a set of experiments.

• The Society of Women Engineer's ``Ask an Engineer'' Project

  ``Ask an Engineer'' is a career guidance activity run by the Society of Women Engineers Pittsburgh, PA section. One asks an engineering question of a female engineer, and receives an email response that lists a home page which will have the question and answer, along with a photo of a female engineer and a description of a particular field of engineering. The goal of this project is to encourage an interest in science and math studies.

• Take Our Daughters to Work Day

  A comprehensive website from GNN for "Take Our Daughters to Work Day." Besides information and resources for parents, it includes pages for the girls, including a web-page-building activity with tutorials, interviews with prominent women, and much more.

• Boston Computer Museum

  This site has great information about the museum, which features over 170 interactive exhibits, including The Networked Planet (TM) -- a new gallery on the Information Highway, the award-winning Walk-Through Computer (TM) 2000, a multimedia robot show, and one of the most extensive collections of historical computers and robots in the world. As well as information about the exhibits, the site has information about kids software, surveys, guidelines for parents and children who are surfing the net, and services and opportunities at the museum.

• Intel Museum Education Tours - Santa Clara, CA

  The tours show how computer chips are manufactured and used, and discuss the chip industry and related careers.

Software and Games for Girls/Kids

• The Computer Museum's Guide to the Best Software for Kids

• Kids' Software Forum

  The Kids' Software Forum is an experimental forum at the Boston Computer Museum. The Computer Museum is testing the idea of running a series of forums on kids' software. The first forum -- Expectations About Kids' Software -- is up and running.

• Girl Games

  Creating high-quality interactive software for girls aged seven to 17 is the aim of this woman-owned and operated multimedia development company. A sampling of products designed to encourage social interaction and creative development are supplied. They also offer Girls Interwire, an electronic newsletter, with scoops the latest on women artists, politicians and educators, and its version of "Herstory," a celebration of women's historical contributions.

• Her Interactive

  Her Interactive is a division of American Laser Games which is developing live-action software specifically for girls. Patricia Flanagan, Executive Director of Her Interactive, believes that girls would use computers more if games were designed just for them. Check out their web site to learn about their first product, McKenzie & Co., a 5-CD-ROM game featuring an adventure at an American high school.

• Adam und der Rechenriese

  ``Adam under der Rechenriese'' is a graphics- and audio-based enhanced program for teaching 1st grade mathematics. So far, it is available in German only.

• Cornell Theory Center Math & Science Gateway

  The Cornell Theory Center Math and Science Gateway provides links to resources in mathematics and science for educators and students in grades 9-12.

• CyberKids

  A web site for kids, sponsored by Mountain Lake Software, Inc., designed to be "a virtual place for kids to share their thoughts and ideas with each other."

• CyberTeens

  A web site for teens, sponsored by Mountain Lake Software, Inc.

• gURL

  Though not specifically related to girls and technology, "gURL" is a feminist web site for young women that offers useful, original content in each issue.

• Her Online

  ``Her Online'' is a web site geared specifically for girls, sponsored and developed by the folks at Her Interactive, a company that specializes in software for girls. ``Her Online" includes news, entertainment, and conversations on subjects of interest to girls, and is aimed at being ``a girls' hometown on the web.'' • Internet for Kids Home Page

  A launching pad to activities and web sites for young folks interested in exploring the Internet.

• Invention Dimension

  A web site at MIT, featuring an "Inventor of the Week" and an archive of inventors. Many women are featured, including computer pioneer Grace Hopper.

• "Just for Kids" Web Site Directory from Lycos

• WizKids OnLine

  This site is designed to be a place for kids, adults, and teachers to learn about computers and how they affect our society. The site also features online games, and provides a place to highlight school and community projects.

• Yahooligans Web Guide for Kids

  A complete web guide of sites suitable for kids, including links to "Science and Oddities" and "Technology" sites.

  The American Computer Science League (ACSL) organizes computer science contests and computer programming contests for junior and senior high school students.

• KidSat/YES - Youth Enhancing Space

  KidSat, a new joint program between educators and NASA, is teaching school children by giving them direct access to NASA mission control and to the space shuttle Atlantis astronauts.
