Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program at The University of Iowa WISE Program The mission of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program is to expand and improve the educational and professional opportunities for women in all fields of science and technology by facilitating institutional and social change. Goals The WISE Program cooperates with science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) programs at The University of Iowa: to increase the participation of women as students, faculty and professional staff. to promote a supportive environment for women to study and work. to integrate the ideas, strengths, and approaches of women into research, teaching, and service. to inform the public of educational and career opportunities for women in scientific and technical fields. Organization The WISE Program was established in 1994 with joint support from the offices of the Vice President for Research and the Provost. The WISE Program staff includes a Faculty Director, a Program Coordinator, and an Advisory Board with three faculty, three staff, and two student representative. Faculty and staff serve three-year rotating terms and students serve renewable one-year terms. New Board members are selected in late Spring, and being their term the following September. The Advisory Board meets monthly from September through June, and all meetings are open to the public. Projects WISE News. The WISE Program publishes a monthly newsletter that includes project updates, announcements, and readers' comments. Resource Library. The WISE Office maintains a resource library in 232 Jessup Hall with information on pre-college science activities, science education, mentoring, and research on women in science. Mentoring. Throughout the year the WISE Program coordinates a variety of mentoring activities for female undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty to promote professional development. Leadership Development. The WISE Program sponsors speakers and workshops designed to help girls and women develop leadership skills. Outreach Directory. This directory will include a summary of science outreach projects sponsored by SEM programs on campus and a speakers bureau with a list of women scientists who are available as speakers for classroom and club activities. Pre-College Activities. Activities for pre-college girls include hands-on science workshops, campus lab visits, and summer research programs.
