Adelle and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in the History of Information
Processing
The Charles Babbage Institute (founded in 1987 with the aim of conducting
and promoting historical research in socio-economic and technical
aspects of information processing) is accepting applications for
the Adelle & Erwin Tomash Graduate Fellowship. This fellowship will
be awarded for the academic year to a graduate student whose
dissertation will address a topic in the history of computers and
information processing. The stipend will be $10,000 plus up to an
additional $2,000 for tuition, fees, travel to the Babbage Institute,
and other approved research expenses. Preference will be given to
students who have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the
research and writing of the dissertation.

The AirForce is seeking dedicated academic scientists and engineers to
participate in eight to twelve weeks of paid research during the summer.
Candidates selected will be assigned to one of six Air Force
laboratories or five air logistics Centers throughout the country. Following
the conclusion of the Summer Research Program AFOSR will offer selected
participants an opportunity to pursue their AFOSR-sponsored work at their own
academic institutions through research grants up to $25,000.
The program is open to both faculty members and graduate students. Both
faculty and students must be US citizens and must be free to work
continuously for an eight to twelve week period from May 15th through
September 30th.

CSAM's goal is to encourage women to enter the field of computing. To
this end, they maintain a scholarship that provides money to in-state
resident women at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor who are
pursuing a career related to Computer Science by earning an
undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or
through the Independent Concentration Program.
The Computing Research Assocation (with support from Microsoft Corporation)
launched in 1994 an annual awards program to recognize undergraduate
students who show exceptional promise in an area of importance to computing
research.

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program
The DOE Computational Science Fellowship Program is designed to support
highly capable students pursuing graduate study in applied sciences
or engineering disciplines with applications in high performance
computing. Fellows must also participate in off-campus research at
designated practicum centers.
The program offers a minimum of $18,000 annual stipend and payment of
tuition and fees for graduate study in scientific and technical
discliplines using computational science methods. The program is
open to U. S. citizens and permanent resident aliens who have completed
their first year of graduate school. Appointments are reviewed
annually and may be renewed up to a limit of four years.

The IEEE Computer Society has several prestigious awards which are
given out yearly to people who have made significant contributions
to the field of computer science.

IEEE Computer Society -- Lance Stafford Larson Student Scholarship
In 1983, the Lance Stafford Larson award was established by the Larson
family in memory of their son. The award is intended to encourage
excellence in communication skills and achievement in computer
science. The award is presented to the best student paper on a
computer-related subject. Papers are judged on technical content,
writing skill, and overall presentation. All undergraduate students
who are IEEE Computer Society members may compete. One award of $500
is given each year to the first place winner. First, second, and
third place winners also receive a certificate and a writing
implement.

the late Richard Merwin, past president of the society. Graduate

The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Central Florida
is pleased to announce the extension of our Industrial Fellows Program with
AT&T Microelectronics in Orlando. AT&T Microelectronics in Orlando is a
semiconductor manufacturing plant that owns over 350 million dollars in capital
investment and employs over 1000 people.
This two years program offers an excellent opportunity to earn a masters degree
in Industrial Engineering while gaining valuable experience at one of the
leading manufacturing companies. The Industrial Fellows receive a stipend,
full tuition and fee waivers, and book allowances. In addition, Fellows will
be employed as research assistants on site at AT&T Microelectronics in Orlando.
The work commitment is 20 hours per week during the academic year and full time
during the summer. The Fellows will work on a research project which will lead
to a thesis. Applicants must have earned a BS in Industrial Engineering or
related field.

NASA Pre-College Grants to Nine Universities
NASA's Office of Equal Opportunity Programs announced the selection of
nine minority universities to receive a three-year grant, Pre-college
Awards for Excellence in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, and
Technology (PACE/MSET), for educational outreach projects.
Each university will receive up to $100,000 per year for the three years
of the grant based on performance and availability of funds under the
program.
The grants are intended to help students who have historically been
underrepresented in college-preparatory mathematics and science classes
gain the skills necessary to pursue science, engineering and related
fields in college.

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens trained in
disciplines of science and engineering of military importance, The Department
of Defense plans to award approximately 90 new 3-year graduate fellowships
in April 1996. National Defense Science and Engineering
Graduate Fellowships will be awarded for study and research leading to
doctoral degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering; biosciences;
chemical engineering; chemistry; cognitive, neural, and behavioral science;
computer science; electrical engineering; geosciences; manufacturing
sciences and engineering; materials science and engineering; mathematics;
mechanical engineering; naval architecture and ocean engineering;
oceanography; and physics.
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellows selected in 1996
will receive a stipend in addition to full tuition and required fees. The
amount of the stipend is $16,500 for 1996-1997; $17,500 for 1997-1998;
$18,500 for 1998-1999. Recipients of 1996-1997 National Defense Science and
Engineering Graduate Fellowships do not incur any military or other service
obligation.

Program is designed to identify and support academic scientists and
engineers who have recently received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees and
who show exceptional promise for doing creative research. The
objectives of this program are to attract outstanding faculty members
of institutions of higher education ("universities") to the Navy's
research program, to support their research, and to encourage their
teaching and research careers. During fiscal year 1996, ONR will make
about 28 awards to academic researchers who received Ph.D. or
equivalent degrees on or after 1 December 1990. At the

Space Grant Fellowships for New Graduate Students
This program targets graduate students in computer science who are
interested in how CS relates to space technology.
These are one-year fellowships with a stipend of
$16,400 plus a tuition waiver. These fellowships
are part of a national program intended to increase the number of U.S.
scientists and engineers available for careers in aerospace and

U.S. Navy Summer Faculty Research Program & U.S. Navy Sabbatical Leave Program

This program provides engineering and science faculty members
the opportunity to participate in research at Navy laboratories for
10 weeks during the summer or while on sabbatical leave.
Participants must be U.S. citizens holding teaching or research
appointments at U.S. colleges and universities.

The Universities Space Research Association (USRA), in collaboration with
the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC) Earth Sciences Directorate,
is offering a limited number of graduate student research opportunities
for Summer of 1996. The program is scheduled for June 6 to August 14, 1996.
The program is designed to spur interest in interdisciplinary studies within
the Earth system sciences and will enable selected students to pursue
specially-tailored research projects in conjunction with Goddard scientific
mentors.
The program is open to students enrolled in or accepted to a U.S. accredited
graduate program in the Earth, physical or biological sciences, mathematics,
computer science, or engineering. Minorities and women are encouraged
to apply. Students must commit to the full ten week period.
