The Computer Science Women's Video Archive Project
The Computer Science Women's Video Archive project is proposed by Dr. Anita
Borg and initially supported by the Computing Research Association. The
ultimate goal is to produce video materials for students and professionals
at many different levels and particularly to encourage young people to
include computing among their career possibilities.
The conference videos and the collected interviews from the Grace Hopper
Celebration of Women in Computing Conference (GHC) will serve as the initial
content of an archive on which to base future educational projects. These
include
- A highlights video from the GHC for distribution to all computer
science departments on the CRA's Forsythe List. Production of the video
tape is funded by the Unisys Corporation. Distribution is tentatively
funded by the Association for Computing Machinery.
- A women in CS lecture series initially including the technical, keynote
and banquet speeches from the GHC. We are currently talking to University
Video Communications and the National Technical University, among others, to
determine the best way to distribute this series. We envision the series
being available in most college libraries.
- A CD-ROM appropriate for distribution to high schools and junior high
schools. In this CD-ROM, we hope to show the more personal side of women
who have chosen computing as a profession. The short interview at GHC will
be the basis for this project. To this end, the interview questions will
in part be drawn from a list contributed by individuals who work with
students and from high school and junior high school students themselves.
Funding for the video taping at GHC is provided by sponsors of the
conference. We have not yet explored funding for this portion of the project.
During the summer of 1994, we will be looking for additional funding and
distribution channels for all elements of the archive. For more information
