Welcome to the 2016-2017 Season

August 27, 2016

Greetings Yale Figure Skating Club members! We are getting excited to begin our 2016-2017 skating season. Here are some changes and enhancements since last year:

  • Program opens on Saturday, September 17. This year there will be two 12-week terms, ending with our spring show in March.

  • Learn to Skate USA (formerly Basic Skills) has been expanded to one hour to provide time for skaters to have their small group lesson (40 minutes) followed by practice activities (20 minutes) or a private lesson.

  • A Free Skate class is being offered on Saturday mornings for skaters beyond Basic 6.

  • A new performance group, Asynchronous, with on-ice and off-ice work, will meet on Sunday evenings for all skaters beyond Basic 6. This fun, non-competitive activity for mixed ages and ability levels will produce a show next spring.

  • A skate purchase/buyback program allows beginning skaters to obtain quality skates at a cost comparable to rental skates.

  • Wednesday practice ice will be offered at Ingalls from 4:15 to 5:45 PM on a non-subscription basis, beginning October 5. More information will be forthcoming

  • Yale Club members will now be able to purchase guest ticket books sold in 40-minute blocks for use at weekend Practice ice sessions. Tickets will streamline our check-in process for guests. However, subscribers still get the best value.

  • A fall test session is being planned.

The welcoming letter from your Membership Chair and the August newsletter contain additional news and information about our upcoming skating season.

Registration is now open. The Membership page has instructions and forms for joining the club and enrolling in Fall term classes and sessions. Registering for Learn-to-Skate classes or Practice sessions now assures you or your child a place in our program. Additionally, two in-person sign-up sessions will be held at Ingalls Rink the weekend before our program starts:

  • Saturday, September 10 from 10:00AM to 12:00 Noon;
  • Sunday, September 11 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM.

Volunteers are always needed to assist in Club operations. This year we are looking for someone to serve as coordinator for our skate purchase/buyback program. Please contact me if your are interested or able to help with this project.

See you at Ingalls!

Preview of the Coming Skating Season

June 2016

While the beginning of the skating season at Ingalls Rink is still a few months away, planning for several changes is now underway:
  • USFS has renamed the Basic Skills program Learn to Skate USA and will be providing YaleFSC with a new program that will focus on fun, fundamentals, a progressive curriculum, community learning, and safety.

  • Our last year's 50 minute Basic Skills session wil become a 60 minute session under the new Learn to Skate USA program. This will provide more time for small group instruction, guided practice, a Performance Preparation group class, and the opportunity for private lessons.

  • A Theater on Ice program for skaters who have advanced beyond Basic Skills is being planned.

  • Advanced skaters may serve as Apprentice coaches.

  • Incentives for members and parents to contribute volunteer time will be available.

  • A skate rental program subsidized by our Special Projects Fund will be implemented.

  • Our web site has moved! The new URL is http://www.cs.yale.edu/yfsc. The old URL will continue to work for the indefinite future, but please update your bookmarks.

We expect this skating season to be one of our best ever! We look forward to your membership and participation. Please do not hesitate to contact our Membership Chair, Mary Brett Lee <yalefsc@gmail.com>, with questions or concerns.
